Seminar on forest health monitoring systems, organized by USSE, Hazi Fundazioa and Neiker

23 / 04 / 2025

On April 8 took place at the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, in San Sebastian, an event on Forest Health Monitoring Systems organized by USSE, HAZI FUNDAZIOA and NEIKER, in the framework of the General Assembly of the IEFC.

The USSE presented the European Commission's proposal for a Forest Monitoring Act to establish a common framework for monitoring the resilience of European forests and the evolution it is having in the framework of co-decision of the European institutions. Then, experts in forest health monitoring systems from different national, regional and international institutions shared their experiences to provide an overview of existing tools for forest health monitoring and open ways for further cooperation between the Atlantic Arc regions.

The event also aimed to assess the potential of the IEFC network to facilitate the exchange of forest health monitoring information between members and regions with planted forests.

Research applied to the field and the collaboration of all the agents involved as well as of the citizens themselves in the detection of possible affections and effective action to combat them is fundamental. The event highlighted the value and importance of having good information on the state of our forests and the need to continue collaborating and sharing data, knowledge and experiences between different institutions and regions in terms of forest health.

The goal must be to apply all this in an effective sustainable forest management to make our forests more resilient to the increasingly evident consequences of climate change in the forests of the Atlantic Arc.
