The SINCERE project asks forest owners in Southern Europe about the ecosystem services their management provides.

The SINCERE project (stimulating innovation in forest ecosystem services) is a four-year project funded through the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme. From 2018 to 2022, SINCERE will develop new policies and new business models connecting knowledge and experience from practice, science and policy, across Europe and beyond.

It is a project in which the Provincial Council of Biscay participates as a partner and in which forest owners actively participate through their representative bodies (Associations and USSE).

In the project, the Provincial Council of BIzkaia has to carry out an innovative action which in this case tries to include the valuation and payment for the ecosystem services provided by the forests in the provincial legislation, so that these are recognised and forest owners can be compensated for their management.

The survey:
Forests provide many benefits to society (e.g. timber, recreation, clean air). These benefits are often referred to as forest ecosystem services. In some cases at the international level, certain ecosystem services are a source of income for forest owners and managers, while others are not. The aim of this survey is to answer the following questions across Europe:

- What ecosystem services do forests provide to forest owners and society?
- What innovations have been developed to support forest owners and managers in providing ecosystem services?

The survey is a joint effort of two innovation projects funded by the European Union (SINCERE and InnoForESt).
The findings will only be used for research purposes. A report will be prepared and shared with all survey participants interested in the results.
