USSE participates in a round table during Forexpo

08 / 07 / 2025

During FOREXPO and at the invitation of the UCFF (Union de la Coopération Forestièr Française), the managing director of USSE, Leire Salaberria, participated with the MEPs Mr. Eric Sargiacomo (S&D, rapporteur in the Parliament of the proposal for a regulation on a monitoring framework for resilient European forests) and Ms. Laurence Farreng (Renew) and the general director of the cooperative Alliance Forets Bois, Mr. Stéphane Vieban, in a round table on “Europe: cross perspectives on policies and ambitions for forests and forestry in Europe”. Laurence Farreng (Renew) and the CEO of the cooperative Alliance Forets Bois, Mr. Stéphane Vieban, in a round table on “Europe: cross perspectives on policies and ambitions for the forestry and wood sector” which took place on Friday June 20 from 11.30 to 12.30 in one of the conference rooms of the FOREXPO site.

In view of the regulatory “tsunami” of legislation that has affected and is directly or indirectly affecting the wood forestry sector under the umbrella of the European Green Pact, during this round table discussion each of the participants gave their opinion on the European policies currently affecting the forestry sector and on what each of them expects to come from Europe in relation to the forestry sector. Leire Salaberria, pointed out that "European policies must rely on professionals and land managers to find a balance between the three pillars: environmental, economic and social. Foresters are ready to implement European policies, but their opinions and needs must be listened to in order to see how to implement them in the most appropriate and balanced way possible. Without them, nothing can be done properly".

It was a great opportunity for the USSE to meet with these two French MEPs at FOREXPO and exchange views on various issues that are currently on the table in Brussels. USSE also tried to convey to them the difficulties and challenges that in many occasions suppose for forest owners and managers to implement and land on the ground the regulations coming from Europe, which in general do not take into account the diversity of existing forest realities. He also stressed the need to encourage and promote the three sides of sustainability, seeking a balance that allows to continue managing forests in Europe, so that they are as resilient as possible and able to meet the challenges they face as a result of climate change.
